This example demonstrates that the student has analysed the essay question and identified a central critical issue for discussion: pastoral poetry can be used as a means of escapism, but does the fact that those writing in this genre are typically sophisticated and cultured make it possible that pastoral poets are doing something more complex than merely praising rural simplicity?. The introduction thus gives some indication of the ground which the essay is probably going to cover, and says which texts are going to be explored. From this, the reader has some idea of how the essay will proceed and knows to look for the development of certain key ideas in the essay.
