Creating a Portal with
PostNuke
Portals
What is a
portal?
define:portal
You’ll get something similar to:
“Web sites that serve as starting points to other destinations or
activities on the Web. Initially thought
of as a "home base" type of Web page. Most major search
engines and directories have positioned themselves as "portals".
Often portals offer free services like e-mail or search functions with the
objective of building traffic so they can generate advertising revenue and sell
products.”
How does
this work?
If you want
to “generate advertising revenue and sell
products” as mentioned in the definition above, what should an e-business
portal include?
Exercise 1
Read your
assignment and as a group, think about the services that you should be offering
your business customers.
Have you
any B2C relationships? How can you use a portal to foster more effective
relationships with your business partners?
Exercise 2
Imagine you
are offering a portal for purchasing books. Select three online suppliers of
books and offer them as wrapped sites within your portal.
Create some
links in a block that allow users to see the suppliers’ sites.
Exercise 3
Once you
have wrapped the sites, think about how people will use it.
How will
the supplier reward you for creating a link to their site?
How will
you generate any revenue?
Write down
some ideas for generating income from your portal. How could you apply these
ideas to your assignment?
Exercise 4
Use the PostWrap module to wrap a site from another assignment
group.
Can you think
about any ways in which it may be beneficial to work with another supplier?
How would
you go about it?
Do you need
to log into their site?
Do you want
to offer certain content to certain users?
Write a
list of the requirements for a portal that allows B2B transactions to work
alongside B2C transactions.
