TUTORIAL FOR "WHAT ARE INFORMATION SYSTEMS?"

Tutorial tasks

Read these questions before the tutorial and write some thoughts down.  You'll need to get together with your team that you are going to complete the assignment with.

We'll work through these questions during the tutorial as a group and put the best answers together.

These tasks require a little imagination.  Remember you can be reflecting on the business in the case study.

Tutorial Task 1

• Provide us with a definition of information systems.  Perhaps;
• Provide a diagram
• Annotate on the diagram to make a rich presentation
• Show different components of information systems
• Present elements in the environment of the information system that effects it
• Compare computerised information systems with traditional paper-based ones

Tutorial Task 2

• How would you describe this organisation?  For example you could;
• Draw a diagram to present the hierarchical structure of the business.
• Put down your thought as to whether this organisation in your opinion highly structured, clear division of labour
• What do you think the tangible assets are in the organisation?
• What are their intangible assets?
• Are the global factors to take advantage of or are there global factors which mean we have to worry about competitors?
• Can you state their core business processes?
• To what extent do you think this organisation operates efficiently?
• Where are the areas that could do with improvement?
