The following shows a sample of the non-credit modules that we offer. Our non-credit modules are designed to help you develop your academic English for study. All our sessions are interactive and practical.

  • Academic English and Skills
    This is a 10 week module for students who want to improve their academic English skills. We cover writing effectively, reading academic articles, giving oral presentations and so on.
  • Academic English for Doctoral Students
    This module is for students who are engaged in research (i.e. PhD students). The focus is on developing the language to explain and present your research in both written and spoken formats.
  • Academic Genres: Understanding and developing academic language for assignments
    This set of 6 2-hour sessions introduces ways of looking at spoken and written assignments. In the sessions we will look at types of assignment and use different tools to identify key structures and language.
  • Academic Language for Source Use
    This module of 3 sessions focusses on how language is used in different subjects to integrate texts into assignments and writing. In these sessions we will look at sample writing and use different approaches to understand how language is used to show criticality, individual voice, and stance when using sources, such as journal articles and text books, in writing.
  • Academic Language for Criticality
    This module of 3 sessions focusses on how criticality is expressed in different ways, and how different disciplines may favour certain language of criticality. In these sessions we will look at sample writing and use different approaches to understand how language is used to show criticality and review evidence.
  • Online Bitesize Grammar for Academic English
    This block of 10 sessions of 1-hour looks at different aspects of grammar in writing, for example how grammatical forms are used to express Academic functions, such as criticality, strength of evidence, and how concision can be achieved through grammatical forms.
  • Writing your master’s dissertation
    This module is for international students who are currently writing or about to start writing their master’s dissertations. Sessions will cover, for example, structuring text, writing abstracts and introductions, reviewing the literature, and making claims.
  • Writing your master’s dissertation (online & bitesize)
    These sessions repeat the material in the on-campus module. This module is for international students who are currently writing or about to start writing their master’s dissertations. Sessions will cover, for example, structuring text, writing abstracts and introductions, reviewing the literature, and making claims.
  • Summer Intensive: Writing your master’s dissertation
    This is a one day workshop for students who have completed their research proposals and may have begun their research. It focusses on the structure, purpose and possible language choices of the dissertation.
