Tutors may also wish to download a copy of the self assessment sheet which complements this essay writing guide. The self assessment sheet is a tool which communicates the assessment criteria to students and provides them with a structured way of reflecting on the relative strengths and weaknesses of their literary studies essays. The document breaks down the essay into a number of categories (the same as those which feature in this essay guide) and briefly describes the characteristics of stronger and weaker essays against each category. The student is invited to rate the various aspects of their work, using the description on the sheet to guide their self evaluation. If the self assessment sheet is submitted with the student's essay, the marker can also rate the student's work against those categories, so providing the student with additional feedback on their performance.

The self assessment sheet is also accompanied by a short guide for students on how to go about assessing their work.
